Dog Dace on the Weir
There is a weir on the river that runs through my village.
It's always full of surprises as to what fish are in there, and so probably a good place to start my blog!
The first few sessions of the seasons have produced small Dace, but they seem to be getting bigger! Not that I've had a massive bag of them, it's been great fun on short sessions on my new MAP 13' Parabolix Black Edition Light Float rod, as true to it's name, it had a lovely light action that lets you feel every kick of a small fish... never bumping one, and never missing a bite!
With the river low and clear, depsite the pacey weir swim, I could fish a light 4no4 stick float in steadier water out of the main flow.
Today would be a short evening session after working on a job locally. As above, I was very pleased to catch about 4 nice small Roach. I had hoped their big siblings would be about, a rarity, although a possibility on this spot, but I wasn't disappointed to catch a decent stamp of Dace that felt amazing flapping about on the end of my new rod!
In a short couple of hours I managed to put together 20 or so of these Dace with one small Skimmer. Great fun, even if the final net doesn't look more than a meager couple of pounds.
With the light starting to fade and still some maggots left, I started to feed heavier with the hope of enticing any bigger Chub that might be about to feed, but it didn't happen and was time to pack away!
